Biomimicry: Nature in Trends

As technology evolves our connection with the outside decreases. Biomimicry is a way that many consumers are pulling nature into their world through a variety of media. It is a way of modeling patterns or designs to copy things that are biologic in nature.

There is extensive research in regards to biomimicry and its use on a more global level. For the purpose of this case we will be focused on its use in promotional products rather than the use at large. This also shouldn’t be confused with eco or eco friendly. While the design may match something natural and may have the general feel it may or may not be made from a recycled or sustainable material.

Many retailers have embraced the idea of copying nature in their designs or in patterns used for materials.

Wood Tone: Wood tone items have made a huge emergence in the market. Not only for the more organic look and feel but the thought of perceived sustainability through use of the item. Some items are more wood than others. For example, a wood tone graphic over a stainless steel water bottle is not as relevant as something using bamboo accents. Adding laser engraving on a bamboo really completes the look of burned wood.

Marble or stone: Marble specifically has become more and more popular. Specifically, white marble which combines the power and clean look of white and the stone to create an over all look. This can be found in drinkware, journals, bags, etc but it is the general look, not actual stone. Decorating with a foil actually makes a fantastic contrast of the two materials even though it makes it slightly less organic. While becoming less popular there are paper materials specifically made of recycled stone. Beautiful feel, but kind of pricey for the product.

Water based/Movement: Many materials have implemented a kind of motion in material. Not generally directly derived from a water or water based material but it gives the feel of a river running over a stream bed or of water cascading down a cliff or just of a warm bright pool.

Greenery: House plant sales are on the rise. More and more people are adding some kind of living plant in their homes or offices. Many new offices build green walls or some kind of greenery to promote air quality and ambiance. Adding a green accent to materials adds that kind of warmth of home to any product.
